This week at the Ryman: July 16-20, 2012

We’ve got quite a week planned here at the Ryman this week! We’re kicking off on Tuesday with the return of Fiona Apple. Apple made her debut at age 19 with 1996’s Tidal, which is certified triple Platinum. Rolling Stone named her Artist of the Year in 1997 and in 1998 she won a GRAMMY for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance for one of the album’s singles, “Criminal.” When the Pawn…followed in 1999, and was hailed by Entertainment Weekly as “the work of an original.” Extraordinary Machine debuted in the Top 10 of The Billboard 200 and appeared on numerous critics’ best-of-2005 lists.

On Wednesday, we’re thrilled to have Jackson Browne with guest Sarah Watkins take our historic stage. Browne has written and performed some of the most literate and moving songs in popular music and has defined a genre of songwriting charged with honesty, emotion and personal politics. He was honored with induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, and the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame in 2007.Beyond his music, he is known for his advocacy on behalf of the environment, human rights, and arts education. Dailey & Vincent is made up of Jamie Dailey and Darrin Vincent, two exceptionally talented and experienced bluegrass musicians. Many music lovers may know Jamie Dailey as a former member of Doyle Lawson & Quiksilver and Darrin Vincent as a former member of Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder, both award-winning and infamous bands in the bluegrass genre. Dailey & Vincent first released their debut album in 2008, and since then, they have quickly become extraordinarily successful. The same year their debut album was released, the group took home an astounding seven IBMA awards, including Entertainer of the Year and Album of the Year.

It’s no surprise Dailey & Vincent have seemingly become kings of bluegrass overnight: their musical ability and style is stunning. Dailey & Vincent’s distinctive lyrics and sweeping melodies set them apart in their respective genre, and the band musically pushes the bluegrass envelope to include elements of gospel, traditional country, and folk. Their songs also feature dense harmonies ranging from low Bass parts to Jamie Dailey’s flawless tenor lead, creating an interlocking wall of sound. From bluegrass tunes like “Head Hung Down” played at breakneck speed to moving ballads like “On the Other Side,” Dailey & Vincent is sure to enchant any bluegrass lover. The Ryman Auditorium is pleased to welcome Dailey & Vincent back to the Springer Mountain Farms Bluegrass Series this year. Tickets are only $26.50 and are available here.

Brian Setzer, the original energetic front man to The Stray Cats, will bring his jazz orchestra to the Ryman this holiday season for a Christmas Extravaganza. After much success in the rockabilly scene in the late ’80s, Setzer moved on to form a big band style jazz orchestra in the 1990s. The band has toured and produced several Christmas-themed tracks since then and returns to the Ryman this winter to spread a little holiday cheer. Expect to hear a mix of unique takes on Christmas classics, upbeat big band hits, and some original Brian Setzer Orchestra tunes.

Upon release in the States on November 8th, 2011 through Sour Mash/Mercury Records the album received rave reviews with Entertainment Weekly noting “”If there is a prize for comeback of the year at the Grammy’s, this years’ prize would almost certainly go to the former Oasis cornerstone Noel Gallagher.”
